Becker Marine Systems Hands Over Cheque worth 20,000 Euros to the "Aida Freunde Der Meere E.v." Association.
The global market leader for ship rudders, Becker Marine Systems, has already lowered CO₂ emissions by one million tonnes from the use of its Becker Mewis DuctⓇ product. The Hamburg-based company is now donating two cents for every tonne of CO₂ thus saved towards the protection of marine habitats.
The presentation of the cheque worth €20,000 to the "AIDA Freunde der Meere e.V." association took place at the Hamburg headquarters of Becker Marine Systems on Wednesday, 3rd December 2014. "We want to keep up donations for the tonnes of CO₂ saved," said Dirk Lehmann and Henning Kuhlmann, the two Managing Directors of Becker Marine Systems.
Dr. Monika Griefahn, Chair of the "AIDA Freunde der Meere e.V." association accepted the cheque on its behalf. The not-for-profit association founded last year is actively involved in national and international projects for the protection of marine habitats.
"More than one million tonnes of CO₂ have been avoided following installation of the Becker Mewis DuctⓇ on seagoing vessels all over the world (equalling the CO₂ emissions of approx. 500,000 privately owned cars per year). For the coming year alone we anticipate savings of an additional 300,000 tonnes of CO₂," said Lehmann and Kuhlmann. These figures are likely to rise in the coming years, because Becker Marine Systems is installing approx. 200 new Becker Mewis DuctsⓇ every year.
The company combines products such as the Becker Mewis DuctⓇ, 800 of which have already been sold, with efficiency, cost savings, and sustainability. On tankers and bulkers the nozzle is normally installed in front of the propeller, improving the influx of water and making significant energy savings possible.
