NYK Group receives first methanol-fuelled bulk carrier

The vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel engine.

NYK Group has received its methanol dual-fuel bulk carrier, its first vessel that uses both methanol and fuel oil.

In a statement, the company said the vessel, named Green Future, was chartered by NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. It was delivered at the TSUNEISHI Factory of TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Co., Ltd.

The vessel has a capacity of 81,500 cubic metres and a deadweight of around 65,700 metric tonnes.

“Methanol has a lower environmental impact than fuel oil, and by using bio-methanol and e-methanol produced using hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources and recovered carbon dioxide, the vessel achieves significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions,” NYK said.
