ICTSI invests $172m to expand Rio Brasil Terminal
Investment strengthens Southeast, Midwest regions’ logistics hub status.
The International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) puts out an approximate $172m investment for the expansion and modernisation of the Rio Brasil Terminal at the Port of Rio de Janeiro from 2025 to 2029.
According to the company, this includes optimising storage yards, building layouts, equipment, utilities, and electrical systems, whilst implementing advanced controls and systems and upholding Brazilian Federal Revenue Service regulations and ICTSI's global commitments to responsible operations and decarbonisation.
The development will increase the terminal's operational capacity by 70.5%, a jump from the 440 thousand twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEUs) per year to 750 thousand TEUs annually.
This will establish Rio de Janeiro as a reference logistics hub for the Southeast and Midwest regions of Brazil.
Rio Brasil Terminal CEO Roberto Lopes said the project "will not only expand the capacity of the Rio Brasil Terminal but also be able to help mitigate the congestion observed in the Port of Santos, better distributing the port demand in the country."
The investment will allow the terminal to continuously operate large vessels on the full berth, keeping pace with the global trend of increasing vessel sizes. The first two new cranes, arriving mid-2026, are designed for the world’s largest vessels, up to 400 metres long.
The terminal will operate with a capacity utilisation of about 75% between 2029 and 2030, ensuring more predictability and competitiveness for the port of Rio de Janeiro.
