Shanghai sets record with 8,000-tonne green methanol bunkering
It bunkered 36,000 tonnes of green methanol since 2024.
Shanghai Electric Group bunkered 8,000 tonnes of green methanol into a CMA CGM container ship at Yangshan port on 17 August, setting a global record for the largest single green methanol bunkering operation, the company said.
Shanghai has bunkered 36,000 tonnes of green methanol cumulatively since completing China's first such operation in April 2024, according to Shanghai Customs.
Zhu Zhaokai, president of Shanghai Electric Group, said the operation establishes an integrated industrial chain in China spanning large-scale green methanol production, onshore and offshore storage and transport, port bunkering, and vessel end-use.
Green methanol, produced from biomass and renewable energy rather than fossil fuels, is positioned as a key alternative fuel for cutting carbon emissions in shipping and chemical industries.
China's green and low-carbon industry sector is now valued at roughly US$1.62b (RMB11t), spanning more than 2 million enterprises.
