ClassNK issues AiP for coastal liquefied CO2 carrier

It will support Japan’s CCS value chain.

ClassNK has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a coastal liquefied CO2 carrier design developed by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Nippon Gas Line Co., Ltd.

The vessel is intended to support Japan’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chain by facilitating the transport of CO2 from smaller emission sites to base locations for overseas storage.

The design was reviewed under ClassNK’s "Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships," incorporating the IGC Code for liquefied gas carriers. After confirming compliance, ClassNK issued the AiP.

The concept study was conducted as part of the FY2024 "Japanese Advanced CCS Projects," led by the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).

ClassNK said it will continue supporting decarbonisation efforts through safety assessments and technological advancements.
