ClassNK launches AI assistant for ship survey operations

Tool provides natural-language answers based on classification survey documents.

ClassNK has launched Survey Compass, an AI assistant that helps shipowners and ship management companies handle classification survey-related operations.

The tool allows users to ask questions in natural language and receive concise answers based on relevant classification survey documents, along with links to the underlying sources.

Survey Compass uses a retrieval-based approach to generate responses from source documents, helping reduce the risk of inaccurate AI-generated information. Users can review the original references before making professional judgments.

The initial version covers Part B of the Rules for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships, the Guidance for Undergoing Surveys, and Technical Information.

ClassNK plans to expand the tool to cover international conventions and flag State requirements and eventually link it with vessel-specific data.

The group said the service was developed as regulatory requirements, particularly those related to environmental compliance, become increasingly complex. Survey personnel must identify applicable requirements and information within limited timeframes.

Survey Compass is available through ClassNK Customer Hub – Ship in Service. Customers using NK-SHIPS can access the service through the ClassNK web service portal using their existing accounts.
