Genbu makes history with first-ever autonomous navigation certification for coastal container ships

The regulator issued AUTO-Nav2 notation to Genbu under autonomous coastal guidelines.

ClassNK has granted domestic liner container ship Genbu its AUTO-Nav2 (All) notation, marking the world’s first assignment of an autonomous navigation classification to a vessel operating on medium- to long-distance coastal routes.

In a press release, ClassNK said the vessel forms part of The Nippon Foundation’s MEGURI2040 Fully Autonomous Ship Programme. Kyokuyo Shipyard Corporation constructed the ship, whilst IKOUS Corporation and Suzuyo Marine Co., Ltd will manage and operate the vessel, respectively.

ClassNK’s notation identifies ships equipped with autonomous navigation systems approved under its framework, applying its Guidelines for Automated/Autonomous Operation of Ships to assess the system installed on Genbu.

The guidelines cover conceptual design, design development, installation, and maintenance of autonomous and automated navigation technologies.

The autonomous navigation system on the vessel emerged from a consortium of participating companies in the MEGURI2040 programme.

ClassNK evaluated the system against its guidelines and confirmed compliance with required standards before issuing the notation.

It developed the guidelines to address autonomous navigation systems that do not fit existing regulatory frameworks. The guidelines are based on findings from demonstration projects involving automated and autonomous vessel operations.

The classification society stated that the notation supports industry demand for formal evaluation of automated navigation technologies and provides a framework to demonstrate system reliability.

ClassNK said it will continue developing standards and certification processes for autonomous ships, aiming to reduce the burden on seafarers, promote workstyle reform, and ensure stability in maritime logistics.
