JSL to Convert Tanker Into FPSO
Jurong Shipyard Limited (JSL) recently secured a major project to convert a 140,000 dwt tanker into a Floating, Production, Storage and Off-loading Facility (FPSO). The contract for the conversion of the tanker Nan Hai Sheng Li, was awarded to JSL by Japan's MODEC Inc., as general contractor to Amoco Orient Petroleum Co (AOPC), who is operating China's Liu Hua 11-1 oilfield in partnership with China Offshore Oil NanHai East Corp and Kerr-McGee Liuhua Limited.
The award of the conversion contract of Nan Hai Sheng Li into an FPSO constitutes a milestone in large scale projects undertaken by MODEC Inc. for AOPC. The work JSL will be carrying out can be classified into two parts, the life extension of the vessel for a further 15 years and the installation of new equipment and systems to meet the vessel's intended function.
To convert Nan Hai Sheng Li to an FPSO, JSL will carry out extensive surveys on her hull, machinery and electrical components. Major repairs and renewals will be done, including steelworks, pittings and pipings and the overhauling of boilers, generators and pumps.
Preservation work will be carried out to the hull, deck and tank intervals. These areas will be added onto the vessel as new structures for the installation of new equipment including a helideck. An internal turret mooring system will be installed forward of the vessel. The mooring system is designed to withstand severe typhoon conditions.
Other major work on the vessel includes the installation of process modules, PSG modules, pipe racks and cranes on deck. New piping will also be added in the tanks and the engine room in conjunction with new machinery installations.
At the kick off meeting held at JSL on October 1994, JSL's Managing Director, Mr Tan Kwi Kin said that the contract was awarded to JSL amidst keen competition from other major shipyards, because of the Yard's track record in conversion work. He is confident JSL's project team will work closely with the owners to ensure satisfactory completion of Nan Hai Sheng Li.
Mr N Suzuki, President of MODEC and Mr M Watkins, FPSO Project Manager, AOPC, also expressed their confidence in JSL undertaking the conversion to their satisfaction.
The project will last about 12 months and is scheduled for mechanical completion around November this year.
