MITSUI E&S commercialises ammonia marine engines

The systems passed IMO NOx certification requirements.

MITSUI E&S has completed the commercialisation of large ammonia-fuelled marine engines and ammonia fuel supply systems (AFSS), allowing the company to supply integrated propulsion systems for ammonia-powered vessels.

The Japanese company is the only manufacturer in Japan producing both ammonia dual-fuel engines and AFSS.

MITSUI E&S completed land-based testing in February 2026 of its MITSUI-Everllence B&W 7S60ME-C10.5-LGIA-HPSCR ammonia dual-fuel engine integrated with its AFSS. The tests were witnessed by ClassNK, which subsequently reviewed the results.

The company confirmed that the systems completed onshore testing in accordance with classification society rules and met International Maritime Organization (IMO) NOx requirements through NOx certification. The completion of these tests enabled MITSUI E&S to commercialise and supply the engines and AFSS for vessels.

Following the tests and review, MITSUI E&S finalised the commercialisation of the engines and AFSS for use on vessels.

The company will expand its AFSS testing facilities for Everllence- and WinGD-licensed engines and establish mass-production systems for both engines and AFSS to meet expected demand.

MITSUI E&S said its integrated ammonia engine and AFSS offering will support the decarbonisation of maritime transport.
