Wah Kwong delivers first SMART-enabled LR2 tanker frontier venture
The ship features advanced “augmented ship” systems.
Wah Kwong Maritime Transport (Wah Kwong) and Bureau Veritas (BV) have delivered the LR2 tanker Frontier Venture, the first in Wah Kwong’s new series of SMART-enabled ships.
Built at Hengli Shipyard, the vessel is the first to feature Group 3 “augmented ship” capabilities, combining advanced on-board digital systems with shore-based support.
The Frontier Venture has been classed by BV with SMART(H1,M1,EnE3,MH3) notations, recognizing enhanced machinery monitoring and energy efficiency. Its expert-in-the-loop system provides early detection of machinery issues and operational recommendations, supporting safer, more efficient voyages.
The 114,000 DWT tanker is 248.8 meters long, 44 meters wide, LNG-ready, and powered by a 10,800 kW Everllence B&W engine. It features three cargo oil pumps with 3,000 m³/h capacity each. Wah Kwong’s second LR2 in this series will be delivered in July 2026.
This delivery follows Wah Kwong’s 2023 launch of the CROWN+ Ultramax bulk carrier Eastern Venture, the first newbuild worldwide to receive BV SMART (EnE1) notation.
The fleet is now moving from foundational digital systems to advanced “augmented ship” capabilities, with seven SMART-enabled vessels under construction across multiple ship types, set for delivery through 2027.
