Shell, Reliance, and ONGC complete India’s first offshore decommissioning project
It included the removal of five wellhead platform.
Shell (BGEPIL), Reliance Industries, and ONGC have successfully completed India’s first offshore decommissioning project, with the safe removal of mid and south Tapti field facilities. The Panna-Mukta and Tapti (PMT) joint venture led the project.
The project included the removal of five wellhead platforms, infield pipelines, and the plugging and abandonment of 38 wells.
Production from the Tapti fields stopped in March 2016. The decommissioning was carried out in compliance with regulatory and environmental standards.
In support of the government's 'Make in India' initiative, key contracts were awarded to Indian companies. Larsen & Toubro handled offshore execution, and Chowgule Shipyard is responsible for onshore dismantling in Ratnagiri.
The project has also contributed to developing India’s regulatory framework for offshore decommissioning.
