Korean firms develop ammonia engine emissions system
System cuts ammonia emissions by 99.7%.
Korean Register, EcoPro HN, and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering have jointly developed an exhaust gas after-treatment system for ammonia-fuelled engines.
The companies said the system, validated through a land-based demonstration and showcase, cut nitrogen oxides emissions by 95% and ammonia emissions by 99.7%, whilst reducing ammonia slip to 30 parts per million (ppm) from 10,000 ppm.
KR said the technology is Korea’s first microwave catalyst-heating exhaust gas after-treatment system for MW-class ammonia engine exhaust, developed under a government-funded ship greenhouse gas emissions project.
The prototype underwent extended operational tests at the KR Green Ship Test & Certification Center, where durability and performance were verified, with the wider project also involving HD Hyundai Marine Solution, the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, and other industry and academic institutions.
Kim Daeheon, executive vice president of KR, said, “Through this demonstration, we have validated the effectiveness of the jointly developed system.”
