India’s major ports drive 7.06% cargo growth with capacity expansion
The Deendayal Port Authority topped throughput with 160.11 million tonnes.
India’s major ports handled 915.17 million tonnes (MT) of cargo in the financial year 2025 to 2026, exceeding the annual target of 904 MT and recording 7.06% year-on-year growth, according to a press release.
Deendayal Port Authority led throughput at 160.11 MT, followed by Paradip Port Authority at 156.45 MT and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) at 102.01 MT.
Other ports, including Visakhapatnam Port Authority, Mumbai Port Authority, Chennai Port Authority, and New Mangalore Port Authority, also contributed to total cargo volumes.
Mormugao Port Authority recorded the highest growth rate at 15.91%. Kolkata Dock System followed at 14.28%, whilst JNPA posted 10.74% growth.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways attributed the performance to capacity augmentation, infrastructure modernisation, and improved multimodal connectivity.
It also cited digital and smart port initiatives, higher handling of coal, crude oil, containers, fertilisers, and petroleum, oil and lubricants, and reduced turnaround time.
The ministry said major ports improved hinterland linkages and operational efficiency across terminals.
India’s major ports operate under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, with the ministry stating the sector will continue to focus on port-led development, logistics integration, and capacity expansion.
