K Shipbuilding to develop 9,000m³ LPG carrier with Sejin, ClassNK

Vessel will comply with the amended IGC Code.

K Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Sejin Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. and ClassNK have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop a new-generation Eco LPG carrier that complies with amendments to the IGC Code.

The IGC Code, which sets international requirements for the construction and equipment of ships carrying liquefied gases in bulk, is scheduled to be amended at MSC 112 in December and enter into force on 1 July 2028.

Ahead of the new requirements taking effect, the three parties will jointly develop a 9,000m³-class LPG carrier designed to comply with the amended code.

The vessel will also feature energy-saving devices (ESDs), including a Rudder Bulb and Energy Saving Fin, to improve propulsive efficiency, fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions performance.

Under the agreement, K Shipbuilding will develop the 9,000m³-class LPG carrier incorporating the IGC Code amendments. Sejin Heavy Industries will develop the cargo tank design incorporating the amendments and its wide-plate bending technology, whilst ClassNK will review the vessel design based on the amended code.

The companies said the collaboration will support the application of the amended IGC Code and contribute to the safe maritime transport of liquefied gases.
