Japan Engine completes hydrogen-fueled marine engine

Engine will be installed on a 17,500-DWT multipurpose vessel.

Japan Engine Corporation has completed the 6UEC35LSGH hydrogen-fueled engine for large commercial vessels.

Developed with Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and Yanmar Power Solutions Co. Ltd. under a NEDO Green Innovation Fund project, the engine was unveiled at Japan Engine’s headquarters on 7 September.

Factory testing achieved a hydrogen co-firing rate of at least 95%, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by more than 95% compared with conventional heavy fuel oil engines.

The engine will be installed on a 17,500-DWT multipurpose vessel being built by Onomichi Dockyard Co. Ltd. for Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. and MOL Drybulk Ltd. under the Blue Harmony project. Onboard testing is scheduled to begin in April 2028.
