COSCO Shipping taps MAN Energy for fleet decarbonisation
The new deal allows retrofitting ships for methane, methanol, and ammonia.
COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (CHI) and MAN Energy Solutions have signed an agreement for the decarbonisation of the former’s vessels.
Following this development, Guo Zhiqiang, deputy general manager, CHI Commercial headquarters said the company’s “integrated one-stop solutions will inject fresh impetus into the green transition of the global maritime industry.”
The framework provides for the retrofitting of existing ships to operate on new alternative fuels like methane, methanol, and ammonia. MAN Energy will provide advanced engine-retrofit technology and digital energy-efficiency solutions, whilst CHI will leverage its engineering, procurement, and construction experience in large-scale ship modification projects.
According to Michael Petersen, senior vice President and head of PrimeServ Denmark, who ssigned the agreement on behalf of MAN Energy, there are some 4,500 vessels globally with the potential to benefit from this initiative.
With five ship-repair yards, CHI can repair and modify approximately 1,500 ships annually.
