DNV unveils recommended practice for Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems
It is inviting feedback from stakeholders.
Risk management company DNV has introduced a new recommended practice (RP) to assess the performance of Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS), opening it for public consultation.
The RP aims to provide a standardised approach to evaluating the efficiency gains of WAPS technologies, supporting the maritime industry's transition towards sustainability.
With around 50 WAPS installations in operation, the technology is seen as a way to cut fuel costs and emissions. The RP introduces an on/off testing method to measure performance under similar conditions, with third-party verification providing shipowners with reliable data.
DNV is inviting feedback from stakeholders, including shipowners, operators, technology providers, academia, and regulators. The public hearing is open until 31 January 2025. Interested parties can submit comments via Veracity under the hearing reference DNV-RP-0686.
