Edgars’ Material Handling Equipment
Edgars has been successful in supplying a highly sophisticated range of materials handling system (MHS) providing the Singapore International Airport’s Cargo Terminal the capacity to efficiently handle an anticipated 160,000 tonnes of cargo yearly.
A total of four organisations were involved in the development of the system. The organisations were — Singapore Airport Terminal Services, the American consultancy firm of Breier Neidle Patrone Associates Inc, the contractor for the system — Transact Overseas Inc, and, of course, Hargill Singapore Pte Limited, Edgar Division.
Edgar was the main sub-contractor for the local fabrication, erection and commissioning of the system in close collaboration with Transact Overseas Incorporated’s resident engineer.
MHS is semi-mechanised with its most distinctive feature being the two Transact-made low-profile transfer vehicles forming the heart of the system. Additional components are the conveyors, forklift trucks, electronic and mechanical weighing scales, docklevellers, scossor lifts, racking and storage boxes.
In association with Transact Overseas Inc., Edgar met the stringent requirement of the job. Edgars’ long standing experience in the field of material handling came to the fore when the project was completed in May 1977.
The Edgar division of Hargill Singapore Pte. Limited is actually involved in the supply of material handling equipment to the Port of Singapore Authority, the Singapore Airport Terminal Services and other major sea and air ports in the region. Their involvement includes supply, maintenance and installation where necessary.
As regards airport equipment they are the sole agent for all the British Airport Equipment (BAE), which is a consortium of Albar Engineering Limited, Norwich Coachworks Limited, Hydro-Hygiene Services Limited, Power Lifts Limited and A.C.S. Engineering Sales Limited, all of United Kingdom.

The lifting capacity of these forklifts is from 1350 kg (2700 lbs) to 15,000 kg (33,000 lbs.) These forklifts are generally well received with a record of high performance and reliability. The biggest users of this equipment are ports followed by various industries and warehousing companies.
The Mitsubishi forklifts are either diesel or LPG driven.
The company also deals in NYK electric forklift trucks. Available in the range are reach trucks and counter balanced trucks with capacities ranging from 500 kg to 3000 kg. Maintenance on these trucks is made easy by unitizing easily replaceable components. Some models have built-in automatic chargers.

Edgar will market the whole variety of models. The manufacturers have coded the models into “K” for construction and civil engineering, heavy-duty cargo-handling and for work at high elevations. Altogether, there are nine models in the “K” series. The ‘U’ series of five models is long mounted and used for “one-man lift-and carry” operations.
