Hanwha Ocean’s LNG FSRU targets 25 years of continuous regasification

3D model reviews expanded from the engine room to the entire vessel.

South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean has launched a liquefied natural gas floating storage and regasification unit (LNG FSRU) designed for continuous regasification for 25 years.

The shipbuilder described the vessel as a “world first” as it can operate without maintenance that cannot be performed at sea.

“Commercial vessels generally undergo maintenance during dry-docking and classification surveys held approximately every five years, allowing work that cannot be performed at sea to be completed,” it said. “Building a vessel that can operate without such maintenance is a world first.”

Hanwha Ocean has built 12 LNG FSRUs. For the latest vessel, the shipbuilder incorporated redundant equipment and durable coatings, and conducted dozens of risk assessments.

It also expanded 3D model reviews from the engine room to the entire vessel to further enhance quality.

Singapore LNG Corporation—a state-owned city gas company—will charter the LNG FSRU, which will supply natural gas to Singapore.

The vessel was ordered in 2024 from Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL).
