HD Hyundai Samho, Avikus ,and ClassNK develop autonomous LNG carrier design
Technology will be assessed for an 180,000-cubic-metre LNG carrier.
HD Hyundai Samho, Avikus, and NIPPON KAIJI KYOKAI (ClassNK) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a joint development project (JDP) to develop a ship design incorporating Avikus’ HINAS Control autonomous navigation solution.
The project will also assess the design’s suitability for obtaining a ClassNK notation related to autonomous navigation.
The three parties will conduct technical studies and verification based on ClassNK’s Guidelines for Automated/Autonomous Operation of Ships. The project combines HD Hyundai Samho’s ship design and construction capabilities, Avikus’ autonomous navigation technology and ClassNK’s expertise in rules and certification.
The project will assess the technical feasibility of applying HINAS Control to an 180,000-cubic-metre LNG carrier currently under construction, with the potential to extend the technology to other vessels in the future.
HD Hyundai Samho will develop the basic vessel design incorporating requirements for the target notation. Avikus will provide HINAS Control and technical support for its autonomous navigation algorithms and system functions, while ClassNK will conduct design reviews and assessments based on the notation requirements.
HD Hyundai Samho Executive Vice President and Head of Design Division Hak-Mu Shim said the MOU is a step towards securing autonomous navigation technology by pursuing Approval in Principle for compliance with classification notation requirements. “By combining ClassNK's regulatory expertise, Avikus's cutting-edge autonomous technology, and HD Hyundai Samho's shipbuilding capabilities, we look forward to providing safer and more innovative autonomous vessel solutions to our customers.”
ClassNK President and CEO Hayato Suga said the collaboration between a shipbuilder, autonomous navigation provider and classification society is significant as international technical standards for autonomous ships evolve. “Through this project, we will contribute to the safe implementation of autonomous ships in society.”
Avikus CEO Do-Hyeong Lim said the project will provide an opportunity to verify HINAS Control against classification standards. “Through this collaboration, we aim to further enhance the reliability of autonomous navigation and accelerate our expansion into the global market.”
