Korean Register, HD Hyundai HHI sign deal on 3D ship design approval

The framework is expected to reduce 2D drawing work and shorten approval timelines.

Korean Register (KR) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a 3D model-based approval process for ship structural design.

The process will allow 3D ship design models to be used directly for classification review and approval, reducing the need for separate 2D drawings.

Shipyards currently need to convert information from 3D design models into 2D drawings for classification approval, creating additional work, and extending the review process.

Under the MOU, HD HHI will provide 3D ship design models and conduct pilot applications on actual vessel projects. KR will establish the review requirements and criteria and develop a framework to assess compliance with classification rules directly from 3D models.

The organisations expect the process to reduce drawing preparation work and shorten class approval timelines.

KR and HD HHI also plan to expand the framework to more vessel types and projects following the development project.
