LNG Canada transports first cargo to Asia
This will help in ensuring stable energy in the region.
The first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo from Canada has started its sail en route to Asia.
According to Mitsubishi Corporation, one of the companies forming the joint venture for LNG Canada, the cargo set sail on 30 June.
LNG Canada is Canada's first large-scale LNG project with a production capacity of 14 million tons per annum (mtpa). Mitsubishi will offtake 15% of the supply produced, which is approximately 2.1 million tonnes per annum.
The company will supply this to its customers across Asia, with Japan as the primary destination, through its wholly-owned LNG marketing subsidiary, Diamond Gas International Pte. Ltd.
“With its abundant natural gas reserves and geographic proximity to Asia, Canada is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring a stable energy supply to the region,” Mitsubishi said.
The company and its partners are exploring opportunities to double the project’s LNG production capacity.
