More offshore wind incidents reported in 2024
This includes one fatality.
The offshore wind industry has recorded more incidents last year, with a total of 1,967 reported, including one fatality.
According to G+ Offshore Wind Health and Safety Organisation’s latest report, this is only its second time recording a fatality in its reporting history.
“During disassembly and scrapping works on a monopile, the scaffolding on which the workers were standing collapsed, resulting in one of the workers losing their life and the second worker suffering a serious injury requiring hospitalisation,” the report read.
All incidents increased, except for asset damage that slightly declined to 375 in 2024 from 390 in 2023. This was thanks to declines in operation sites, where asset damage events fell 37%, from 82 to 52.
“However, this decline was mitigated by the increase in development site asset damage events, which increased by 229%, from 17 to 56,” the report noted.
Jack-up vessels/barges incident area accounted for 14% of all injuries. The other incident areas where most injuries occurred in 2024 were: turbine nacelle, with 55 incidents; onshore civils works, with 50 incidents; CTVs, with 50 incidents; and SOVs, with 44 incidents.
All these account for 43 % of all incidents experienced in 2024.
