Oshima’s bulk and ammonia carriers advance with ClassNK approval

The ship designs were cleared for safety and regulatory compliance.

ClassNK has issued Approvals in Principle for the concept designs of a bulk carrier and an ammonia carrier developed by Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., confirming the feasibility of both designs from safety and regulatory perspectives.

The bulk carrier design features a membrane-based onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) system, developed jointly by Oshima Shipbuilding and Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., according to a press release.

ClassNK reviewed the design under its OCCS guidelines, noting that the membrane separation method requires less power and installation space than traditional amine absorption systems.

The second approval covers an 83,000- cubic-metre ammonia carrier fitted with an IMO Type B independent tank, offering advantages in cargo capacity and outfitting efficiency.

ClassNK conducted the reviews in accordance with the IGC Code and Part N of its rules for the construction of steel ships, confirming that both designs meet the applicable regulatory requirements and guidelines.
