Pan-United Shipyard Completed $25 Million Tanker for Petroships Group

Pan-United Shipyard Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of industrial group Pan-United Corporation Ltd, has completed building a $25 million clean product tanker for the Petroships Group, a major tanker operator in the Asia-Pacific region.

The 12,400 dead- weight tonne vessel will be named Petro Concord in a ceremony at the shipyard in February 1995. built in 14 months, Petro Concord is the third 12,400 dwt tanker Pan-United has built for Petroships. The other two tankers are Petro Aspac, built in 1990 and Petro Ranger in 1993.

The Petro Concord has a carrying capacity of 14,300 cubic metres and will be deployed in East Asia. It will be registered under the Singapore flag.

Mr Alan Chan, Chair- man of Petroships Pte Ltd, said, "The appeal of a piece of asset is very much determined by the fourth dimension which is timing. The fourth dimension is often elusive and difficult to grasp." It looks like the time is about right to add this new ship to our fleet to meet the palpable rising demand. We shall see."

Dr Ow Chin Hock, Executive Chairman of Pan-United Corporation Ltd, noted: "Building a third tanker for Petroships affirms our shipyard's excellent track record for handling sophisticated and complex newbuilding and ship conversion projects. It reflects our commitment to professional work standards, innovative customisation and on-time delivery.

"We look forward to even closer co-operation with Petroships in future projects," added Dr Ow. Besides giving strong support to the shipyard, Petroships has also entered into a joint-venture with Pan- United Corporation in China to build a river port in Changshu (north of Suzhou City), in Jiangsu Province.

With the completion of the Petro Concord, Pan-United Shipyard has built 112 vessels in over 10 years of operations. These include specialised cement carriers, bulk carriers and floating docks.

Last December, the yard completed the conversion of a car ferry into a "super" livestock carrier Danny F II (ex- Don Carlos) capable of transporting 100,000 sheep in a single voyage. Just last month,it also completed the lengthening of a Philippine inter-island passenger ferry, Sugbu, and changed its entire propulsion system to give a new lease of life to the vessel.

The yard is now building a 20,000- tonnes maximum lifting capacity floating dock and two 16,000dwt specialised cement carriers for overseas clients.

The shipyard constitutes the Pan-United Group's core business in the marine industry. The Group is also established in the shipping industry. Within the region, it is building up new core businesses in infrastructural- related areas and in port and land development.
