RUST-KOTE - a Revolutionary New Ballast and Void Coating

Tenaga Mashhor (S) Pte Ltd, sole distributor for ROYAL CHEMICAL CORPORATION, USA, announced a revolutionary new ballast and void coating that fills a niche between epoxies and soft coatings.

RUST KOTE is a semi-hard, environmentally friendly coating with NO VOCs, firm but flexible, durable, low cost rust penetrating preventative coating. It has NO FLASH POINT and is Non-Flammable, hence "HOT WORK" can be carried out simultaneously while applying RUST KOTE.

The product consists of specially milled asphalt, polymers and surfactants. This enables RUST KOTE to penetrate the mother metal then drys to a firm flexible coating that is impenetrable to salt water and oxidation. The surfactant reduces surface tension allowing water and the specially milled asphalt to mix, creating an emulsion. This same surfactant acts like a penetrating oil that allows RUST KOTE to penetrate tightly bound rust. A unique blend of polymers were added for flexibility and strength.

RUST KOTE is a water based, one component 2 coat system. The first undercoat is RUST KOTE BLACK of 250 microns wet film thickness (WFT) and the second topcoat is a lighter shade RUST KOTE GREY. Together, the 2 coat system ensures a total thickness of 500 microns WFT. The contrasting colours make it easier to inspect for "Holidays". RUST KOTE is designed to go over a clean tight rusty surface pressure washed to approximately 5,000 psi. Application can be done with either a brush, roller or airless spray unit, but being a water-based coating, good forced ventilation is required, regardless of whether its applied out in the sea or drydocks.

RUST KOTE has been granted TYPE APPROVALS by DNV, ABS, BV under a new classification known as SEMI-HARD, High Build Coating.

RUST KOTE has been tested by an independent lab EFEH & ASSOCIATES of Houston, for a 2000 hour Salt Fog (ASTM) and a EPA toxicity analysis and passed both. Further evaluation and classification for semi hard coatings were carried out by MARINE MATERIALS, on 21st March 1995 and was given the thumbs up. RUST KOTE has a proven track record of 3 years in the market with some reputable marine and offshore drilling companies.
