Subic Shipyard & Engineering Inc
Subic Shipyard and Engineering, Inc (Subic Shipyard) is a shipyard serving ocean going vessels of up to 340,000 dwt. It provides repair, conversion and building services for shipowners. It also undertakes steel fabrication for land-based and marine or offshore structures.
Situated in the north of Subic Bay on the main Philippine island of Luzon, Subic Shipyard is strategically located to serve ocean going vessels on the Asian route, especially those plying between Japan and southeast Asia or Australia. It is 67 nautical miles by sea and 145 km by land from Manila, the capital of the Philippines.
The yard's favourable site protects ships against rough seas and destructive strong winds. There is also adequate space and water depth for anchorage in the immediate vicinity of the yard.
Classified as an export enterprise under the Export Processing Zone Authority, Subic shipyard also enjoys tax-free status for all imports and exports.
The yard was previously known as the Philippine Shipyard and Engineering Corporation (Philseco). A joint venture between a subsidiary of the Philippine National Bank and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd of Japan, it commenced operations in 1982. In 1994, it was privatised with new shareholders and management.

Shareholders of Subic shipyard include Keppel Corporation Limited of Singapore, Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd and Mitsui Engineering & shipbuilding Co Ltd of Japan, and Filipino partners. By combining their experience in shiprepair and conversions, shipbuilding and other engineering works, the shareholders are determined to turn Subic Shipyard into a world class facility.
The yard is managed by Keppel Corporation Limited, whose expertise includes shiprepair, shipbuilding, rig building, steel fabrication and engineering. Its shiprepair division, Keppel shipyard, is the market leader in Singapore, with a forte in ship conversion and life extension of super tankers and bulk carriers.
In addition to Subic Shipyard, Keppel owns and operates six shipyards overseas. These include two others in the Philippines, and one each in United Arab Emirates, USA, Vietnam and Australia.
In engineering, Keppel has turnkey capability from design and procurement to fabrication and commissioning.
SKILLED WORKFORCE
Subic Shipyard has a pool of highly skilled workforce providing quality and on-time services. More than half of the production workforce including managers have been trained in Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan.
The new management will ensure the continuation of this training in Japan and extend it to Keppel Shipyard in Singapore.
