
Vadhavan Port to expand India’s container handling capacity by 23.2 million TEUs
The port will elevate the role of India in the global maritime space.
The government has shared updates about the proposed Vadhavan Port that is expected to expand India’s container handling capacity by 23.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarabananda Sonowal said various agreements have been signed for a skills programme to support the operation of the port. This includes the deal between Vadhavan Port Project Ltd (VPPL) and Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University.
JNPA and Directorate General of Shipping are also set to provide skill development training to locals and project-affected people in the Vadhavan region through selected Maritime Training Institutes.
Training programmes are also ongoing for heavy vehicle driving and mechanics in partnership with NGOs.
VPPL has also launched a dedicated WhatsApp Chatbot to interact with the youth of Vadhavanfor easy access to the skilling programme.
Meanwhile, a strategic memorndum of understanding has been signed between VPPL and Sahyadri Farms for rural entrepreneurship and fortifying the agri-value chain.
