HMM to deploy AI navigation on 40 ships in first phase

Three-way pact splits roles: data provision, platform support, and solution development for joint technical work.

HMM has signed contracts with Avikus to introduce AI-based autonomous navigation solutions across its fleet and entered a three-party memorandum of understanding with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and Avikus to support joint research and technical cooperation.

Under the initial phase, HMM will deploy the autonomous navigation systems on 40 vessels.

The company said it plans to use operational data from these ships to refine the technology and improve fleet competitiveness, with a view to expanding deployment across its entire fleet if the rollout proves successful.

Under the agreement, HMM will oversee implementation and provide operational data, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering will supply vessel platforms and technical support, and Avikus will provide and further develop the autonomous navigation solutions.
