HD Hyundai Samho delivers first VLAC to Maersk

Vessel is first of five VLACs ordered in 2023

HD Hyundai Samho has delivered its first very large ammonia carrier (VLAC), the 93,000-cubic-meter Jane Maersk, to Danish shipping company Maersk.

The vessel is the first of five VLACs ordered by Maersk in November 2023 and can transport both liquefied ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

To address ammonia’s corrosive and toxic characteristics, the vessel is equipped with specialised safety systems, including a “High Level Alarm” designed to reduce the risk of misloading.

The delivery strengthens HD Hyundai Samho’s position in the next-generation eco-friendly ship market.

The company has secured nine VLAC orders this year, bringing its total VLAC order backlog to 22 vessels valued at $2.55 billion.
