Inmarsat, SK telink expand South Korea connectivity

NexusWave will be deployed across South Korean shipping fleets.

Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat company, and South Korean telecommunications provider SK telink have signed an agreement to expand maritime connectivity across South Korea’s shipping industry.

The agreement will bring Inmarsat Maritime’s NexusWave connectivity services to shipowners seeking to improve operational efficiency, resilience and crew welfare.

It covers car carriers, container ships, VLCCs and other vessels operated by South Korean shipping companies, including HMM and SINOKOR.

The companies have worked together since 2007. The agreement combines Inmarsat Maritime’s global network and maritime expertise with SK telink’s market presence and customer relationships.

NexusWave supports cloud-based applications, remote technical support, cybersecurity, vessel performance optimisation and crew connectivity.

For South Korean operators trading across Asia, the service can manage individual network underlays based on local requirements while maintaining connectivity through its bonded service.

The planned integration of ViaSat-3 into NexusWave is expected to increase regional capacity and improve performance and flexibility for vessels operating on major maritime routes.
