
Singapore renews partnership to boost sustainable shipping and innovation
Part of the agreement is CMA CGM expanding its fleet.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has renewed its partnership with CMA CGM Group to enhance sustainable shipping and innovation.
In a statement, MPA said the latest partnership builds on an earlier 2022 memorandum of understanding. The latest deal was signed by Teo Eng Dih, chief executive of MPA, and Rodolphe Saadé, chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM.
Under the deal, CMA CGM will expand its fleet and vessel tonnage, adding more vessels under the Singapore Registry of Ships. This will include four 23,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) LNG vessels.
The company has invested nearly S$26.67b (US$20b) in LNG and methanol-powered ships. It will have 153 ships capable of using low-carbon energies in its fleet by 2029.
Both parties will also explore pilot trials, including testing an online system for tracking carbon emissions and sharing best practices to reduce emissions They will also conduct tests for efficient and secure data exchange.
In terms of talent, the partnership will conduct leadership programmes, exchanges, internships, and scholarships. CMA CGM will work with the Maritime Energy Training Facility to develop a seafarers’ training programme for operating alternative fuel vessels.
