PIL orders seven 1,400-TEU container ships to expand regional fleet
New ships will strengthen Intra-Asia and Pacific Islands services.
Pacific International Lines (PIL) has ordered seven 1,400-TEU container vessels from China’s Huanghai Shipbuilding as part of its fleet renewal and expansion programme.
The new vessels will strengthen PIL’s capacity and operational efficiency across its Intra-Asia and Pacific Islands services.
Measuring 172 metres long and 25 metres wide, the ships have been customised for the company’s target regional markets, allowing them to serve smaller ports whilst connecting them to key transhipment hubs across its network.
The vessels will be methanol-ready, allowing PIL to adopt lower-emission fuels as supply and infrastructure develop. They will also incorporate energy-saving technologies, including pre-swirl vanes and propeller boss cap fins, to improve propulsion efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.
Additional features will include fixed fire water monitors and cargo hold water spray systems to strengthen onboard firefighting capabilities.
PIL CEO Lars Kastrup said the investment would expand the company's capacity across its regional networks whilst supporting its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The vessels will also be equipped with digital capabilities to improve operational efficiency and monitor vessel performance, enabling PIL to offer wider services and sustainable shipping solutions, he said.
The seven ships are scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2030. PIL selected Huanghai Shipbuilding for its technical capabilities, industry experience and ability to meet the company's requirements for quality, efficiency and delivery.
