ClassNK issues guide for onboard carbon capture deployment
The handbook covers carbon dioxide handling from unloading to storage or use.
ClassNK has released a handbook to help shipowners and operators assess the technical, infrastructure, and regulatory requirements for implementing onboard carbon capture systems (OCCS).
The Onboard Carbon Capture Systems Implementation Framework covers the OCCS value chain, from capturing carbon dioxide in ships’ exhaust gas to unloading, transporting, storing, sequestering, or utilising it.
It also addresses emissions measurement and verification, including monitoring, reporting and verification and chain of custody systems for tracking captured carbon dioxide and its associated attributes.
The handbook comes as the maritime industry explores ways to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including energy-efficiency improvements and alternative fuels.
OCCS involves capturing carbon dioxide from ship exhaust, processing it, and temporarily storing it onboard.
However, implementation requires arrangements for handling captured carbon dioxide after unloading, as well as mechanisms to quantify and verify emissions reductions.
ClassNK has previously developed its Guidelines for Onboard CO₂ Capture and Storage Systems to establish safety and technical requirements.
It has also gained experience through demonstration projects and GHG certification services, which informed the new handbook.
