Becker Marine Systems on the Course to Success with the Optimised Schilling® Twisted Trailing Edge Rudder

The improvement of energy efficiency in the global shipping industry is one of the sustainable goals of the Becker Marine Systems company. The world market leader for high-performance rudders is presenting a new rudder profile, the optimised Schilling® Twisted Trailing Edge (Schilling® TT) Rudder.

Two years following the successful development of the new Becker Schilling® TT Rudder, the outcome has been positive: “Our Twisted Trailing Edge modification of the familiar Schilling® Rudder has become firmly established on the market,” said Walther Bauer, Director of Sales & Projects at Becker Marine Systems. Becker’s engineers were successful in meeting customer demand for a well-considered solution for propulsion along with improved manoeuvrability in one rudder.

“We are getting consistently positive feedback about the improved performance of the rudder thanks to its asymmetric trailing edge,” said Bauer about the Hamburg-based company’s innovation. Development of the rudder had already begun quite a few years ago and the mature product is now encountering increased demand on the market, not least due to greater environmental regulations in the shipping industry.

The rudder is suitable, among others, for tankers, general cargo carriers, and some research vessels which benefit from increased manoeuvrability. These ships usually have to travel long distances to their area of operations and once there are dependent on increased manoeuvrability.

At the beginning of last year, Becker Marine Systems recorded incoming orders for ten Twisted Trailing Edge Rudders for general cargo carriers with a carrying capacity of 3,300 and 8,500 dwt.

Its environmentally-friendly energy efficiency makes the Becker Schilling® TT Rudder a perfect addition to Becker Marine Systems’ existing energy-saving solutions.

“We combine the rudder with our specially optimised rudder bulbs in order to further lower energy consumption,” said Bauer about the product innovation, which has lower servicing and maintenance costs due to the simple design of its rudder blade.

Hamburg-based Becker Marine Systems is the market leader for high-performance rudders and energy-saving manoeuvring technology solutions for any type of ship. Becker’s products are well established on the world market and represent the top choice for both super tankers as well as container ships, passenger ferries, large cruise ships, and luxury yachts.
