PTPAL Indonesia rebuilds floating power plant for South East Sulawesi

PT PAL Indonesia plays an important role in increasing the national electrification ratio, especially in the leading, outermost, and disadvantaged regions in Indonesia. This is realized through the construction of the second floating power plant, titled Barge Mounted Power Plant (BMPP) 60MW Kolaka 2, which is a collaboration between PAL and PT PLN (Persero) through its subsidiary PT PLN Indonesia Power.

Today BMPP Kolaka is entering the Keel Laying stage or laying the keel of the ship. The BMPP 60 MW Kolaka 2 keel laying ceremony was also attended by Vice President Construction Control, Site Manager of PT PLN Indonesia Power along with General Managers of PT PAL Indonesia, Head of Project & Project Management Team PAL, and staff. As the name implies, BMPP 60MW Kolaka 2 will later strengthen electricity distribution for the Kolaka region, Southeast Sulawesi.

Fardhian Windo, Vice President Construction Control of PT PLN Indonesia Power, in his speech conveyed the importance of the keel laying stage in the construction of BMPP. “Today, an important stage we have gone through will be a milestone for our project. There is still a long way to go to improve development progress, it still requires focus, it still requires synergy from each party. The collaboration that we have previously done with the construction of BMPP 60MW Nusantara-1, we will go through again with BMPP 60MW Kolaka-2. We still have a long way to go, discuss energy, time and costs may be mobilized together,” he said.

This keel laying momentum is a time when PT PAL Indonesia and PT PLN Indonesia Power must close ranks, to strengthen collaboration and strategize while completing the construction of the 60MW Kolaka-2 BMPP well. So that it can provide benefits in providing electricity and protecting the Indonesian people can be realized.

The series of events consisted of simultaneous keystrokes by Fardhian Windho, Vice President of Construction Control and Aris Suhariyono, General Manager of General Engineering of PT PAL Indonesia as an official marker of the implementation of the BMPP 60MW Kolaka 2 keel laying. And continued with the signing of the minutes by the two officials, and the Indonesian Classification Bureau (BKI) as the institution that certifies the BMPP 60MW Kolaka 2 class. And followed by cutting tumpeng, as a form of gratitude for the smooth implementation of the construction process of this second floating power plant.

On another occasion, PAL COO Iqbal Fikri said that PT PAL Indonesia in its capacity as a world-class maritime and energy company, strongly supports electrification programs, especially electrification for Eastern Indonesia. “Floating power plants have proven to be one of the solutions that can reach not only electricity needs in Eastern Indonesia. But it can also be empowered in disaster situations or certain events such as PON or summits that require energy supply in a short time. PT PAL will continue to innovate in the form of floating power plants with higher mobility levels, towards floating power plants that are plug and play, and also floating power plants that are easy to pull and move between one location and another,” explained Iqbal.

Furthermore, Iqbal emphasized that PAL has completed the 60MW Nusantara 1 BMPP, with reliable performance in producing electricity. “We expect consistency and continued support for the development and innovation carried out by PT PAL not limited to diesel, diesel and gas power plants. In the future, it is also expected to be able to innovate in floating solar power plant products, or other sources of electricity from new and renewable energy,” said Iqbal.

As Chief Operating Officer (COO), Iqbal Fikri is also proud of PAL’s achievements by winning the Indonesia Best Electricity Award won in 2020 and 2023. “This is proof that PT PAL Indonesia continues to issue innovations, in order to increase competitiveness and is ready to be the most superior among other competing companies, in producing floating power plants in Indonesia,” he concluded.

BMPP 60MW Kolaka 2 is a follow-up product of the series of floating power plant procurement of 150 megawatts, which is contained in the contract signed on September 30, 2019, agreed to procure 3 units of power generation ships, consisting of two units with a capacity of 60MW each, and one unit with a capacity of 30 MW.

Previously, BMPP 60MW Kolaka 2 had gone through the first steel cutting stage on September 23, 2022, in the production area of PT PAL Indonesia’s Commercial Ship Division. Not only as a manufacturing industry engaged in maritime defense, PAL is currently with PLN in the construction of BMPP Kolaka 60MW, committed to providing the best service in providing electricity, especially in Eastern Indonesia.

Having the flexibility of operation with different fuels, BMPP 60MW Kolaka 2 is supported by 6 units of Dual Fuel Engine W20V34DF with automation system. Where this floating power plant can be operated using 2 modes, namely with diesel and gas fuel. The level of heat rate and specific fuel consumption (SFC) is efficient, making BMPP can be operated continuously for 20 years, without docking repair. Of course this is a very expensive value in the national level electricity supply sector.

BMPP 60MW Kolaka 2, which has a length of 72 meters and a width of 27.4 meters, is recognized as very effective and efficient for an archipelagic country like Indonesia. As well as being the answer to the challenge of building landbase-based power plants, which are calculated to be quite high costs. The existence of this BMPP is one of PAL’s real supports in the program launched by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo in the 35,000 MW national electrification program, by intensifying electricity infrastructure development.

In January 2022, the sail away of BMPP Nusantara I was carried out which will increase electricity supply in Ambon. On the other hand, the procurement of BMPP 60MW Kolaka 2 itself is a form of real effort by the domestic industry in meeting national electrification needs and support in moving the wheels of the economy in the Kolaka region. It is hoped that the cooperation that has been established for so long can continue to run and hopefully can make a positive contribution to Indonesia’s electricity. Reliability and continuity of electricity supply for Southeast Sulawesi Province, as an effort to support investment activity programs and maintain stability and adequacy of electricity needs. And the highest appreciation for the synergy of domestic industries in meeting national electrification needs.

PT PAL Indonesia is the largest maritime manufacturing company in Indonesia. We have business advantages in the design capabilities of warships, commercial ships, and general engineering. In addition, we are also fairly reliable in maintenance & repair (harkan) and overhaul of maritime products both warships, submarines, commercial ships, as well as general engineering of energy products and electrification.
