Sembcorp Marine Wins Outstanding Maritime R&D and Technology Award at SIM Awards 2017

Sembcorp Marine received the Outstanding Maritime R&D and Technology Award at the Singapore International Maritime Awards 2017 (IMA 2017) for its highly energy-efficient and environment-friendly ballast water treatment solution.

The Semb-Eco LUV, a non-chemical and byproduct-free ballast water management system, combines filtration, ultraviolet radiation and patented bio-fouling control technology to effectively destroy invasive species in ballast water. It has the lowest power consumption among similar products in the market.

Currently the only ballast water management system from Singapore type-approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Semb-Eco LUV was researched, developed, manufactured and factory-tested here.

With its innovative technology, the Semb-Eco LUV helps global ship operators comply with the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention coming into effect on September 8 this year.

The regulation requires operators to develop vessel-specific ballast water management plans and meet compliance treatment standards before discharging ballast water into the environment.

“We are very honoured to win the Outstanding Maritime R&D and Technology Award,” said Sembcorp Marine President & CEO Wong Weng Sun.
“It comes at a time when Sembcorp Marine is increasing our focus on sustainable solutions to support offshore and maritime customers in meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations,” Mr Wong said.
“This award greatly encourages us to push the technology envelope in creating effective and cost-efficient products and services.”

One of 10 award categories presented at the IMA 2017 ceremony and gala dinner this evening, the Outstanding Maritime R&D and Technology Award recognises a company in Singapore for outstanding innovation in research, development or testbedding of technology for the maritime industry.

IMA 2017 award winners were selected by an independent judging panel consisting of key industry representatives and chaired by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore Chairman Niam Chiang Meng.

At IMA 2015, Sembcorp Marine won the Offshore & Engineering Award for its significant contributions towards the development of Singapore’s offshore and marine engineering sector.
