Wan Hai 503 salvaged, set for recycling after offshore fire
The incident, which claimed four lives, is still under investigation.
Salvage operations for Wan Hai 503 have been completed and have also been delivered for recycling following a container fire off the coast of India on 9 June 2025, Wan Hai Lines Ltd. reported.
The 4,250 TEU vessel was towed to Drydocks World Dubai after discharging the containers at Jebel Ali Port of Refuge on 26 December 2025.
It was then handed over to APT Global under a BIMCO Recycling Contract, arriving alongside a designated berth at Dubai on 12 January 2026.
The vessel will be recycled following the requirements of the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships.
Wan Hai reported a total of 1,696 containers were salvaged from the vessel, most of which suffered fire damage, except those stowed on the vessel’s stern.
The incident claimed the lives of four seafarers, injured six crewmembers, whilst four were reported missing.
Wan Hai said that the authorities are reviewing the cargo list and related data to identify the source of fire.
The company also ensured continued engagement with authorities and stakeholders as required.
